It is interesting to observe that in Scripture there are a number of times when there is a period of forty days attached to major events. The two most prominent of these might be the time Moses spent on Mount Sinai receiving the Law and the time Jesus spent in the wilderness while being tempted by the devil. In fact, we find nine different times when forty days are assigned to a Biblical event. This is significant when you consider that 9 x 40 = 360 days; Jewish calendars in the past are represented by a 360-day year. We can conclude that these forty-day periods represent seasons of testing in the believer’s life.   The First Season The first of these “seasons” is found in Genesis 7:4-5 in reference to the predicted flood:   " For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights ; and I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made ." This essay is the result of a review of Ken Johnson’s book, “The Ancient Mysteries of the  Essenes,”  section 3, “Ancient Order of Melchizedek.” And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life.   I acquired a book recently written by Ken Johnson entitled “The Ancient Mysteries of the Essenes.” In it, Johnson discusses the various calendars used by humanity throughout the ages and which one might be Biblically accurate. This essay is based on Part 1 of the book entitled, “The Ancient Dead Sea Scroll Calendar and the Prophecies it Reveals.” It forms the basis of his conclusion for a Biblical calendar, based on a consistent application of the Scriptures. It is his perspective that the Essenes, custodians of the Dead Sea Scrolls held to a Biblically accurate calendar that is supported by the fulfillment of a number of Old Testament prophecies. The calendar we use today is the Gregorian (Julian) Calendar, a solar calendar based on a 365-day year with one extra day added every four years. Some holidays are set on the solar calendar.
